The Print-on-Demand (POD) industry has exploded. Platforms like Printify, Printful, and Merch by Amazon allow anyone to upload a design and start selling custom apparel instantly. However, the biggest mistake new sellers make is uploading low-quality, pixelated designs.

While most POD platforms require you to upload a final PNG file (usually at 4500x5400 pixels at 300 DPI), the absolute best way to create and manage your design library is by using vector graphics. In this guide, we will explore why SVG is the perfect master format for T-shirt designs and how to prepare them for print.

Why Build Your Master Files in SVG?

Designing exclusively in a raster format like Photoshop limits your flexibility. Designing in a vector program like Illustrator or Inkscape and saving as SVG provides massive benefits for apparel designers:

  • Infinite Scaling: A design that looks great on a small baby onesie might need to be blown up to 14 inches wide for a men's 3XL hoodie. With a raster image, scaling up causes blurriness. With a vector SVG, you can scale the design to cover a billboard with zero quality loss.
  • Easy Color Swapping: T-shirt sellers often need multiple color variations of the same design (e.g., a white text version for dark shirts, and a black text version for light shirts). In an SVG, changing the color of an entire design takes one click.

Handling Fonts for Apparel

While you should keep your master file as an SVG, you will almost always need to export it to a high-resolution PNG for the actual POD upload.

  1. Set the Canvas: Set your vector artboard to the exact specifications required by the POD platform (e.g., 15 x 18 inches).
  2. Check the Background: Ensure your SVG has a transparent background. You do not want a giant white square printed on a black t-shirt.
  3. Export: Export the artboard as a PNG at 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch). This ensures the physical print will be incredibly crisp.
